How Long Is a CSCS Card Valid? Every Card and Registration Expiry Date

A CSCS card is not one expiry date, and "five years" is only true for some of them. The card in someone's pocket, the test that qualified them for it, and the company registration that lets you take the work on all run on separate clocks. This guide gives the validity period for each, from the schemes' own pages, and flags the two we could not confirm rather than filling them in. Why "five years" is the wrong mental model

   The test expires before the card does. The CITB Health, Safety & Environment test only counts for a CSCS application if it was passed within the last two years. Someone can hold a perfectly valid card whose underlying test is long out of date — that is fine until they need a new card, at which point they are retaking a test nobody budgeted for.    The first Labourer card is half the length of the renewal. Two years, then five. A firm that took on three labourers in the same month in 2025 has three cards expiring together in 2027, not 2030.

   Company registration and individual competence are different clocks. Gas Safe business registration runs twelve months; the ACS certificates that qualify your engineers run five years. Neither tells you about the other, and losing either takes the work away.

   Nothing lines up with your accreditation. CHAS, SafeContractor and the rest renew annually on their own date, and they ask to see the cards at assessment. A card that expires two months before a renewal is a problem you find out about inside the assessment.

What assessors actually ask for

A CHAS documents checklist lists training records as one of eight evidence categories, and the common failure is not a missing certificate — it is the absence of a matrix showing who holds what and when each one expires, so the assessor cannot see coverage across the team at a glance. The same is true of a main contractor's PQQ. Sending the certificates is not the same as showing they are current.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a CSCS card valid for?

It depends on the card. The Skilled Worker (blue) card runs five years. The Labourer (green) card runs two years on first application and five years on renewal — that change took effect on 1 February 2025, so anyone issued a first Labourer card since then has a two-year card, not a five-year one.

Why is my CSCS Labourer card only valid for two years?

Because CSCS reduced the validity of the first Labourer card to two years on 1 February 2025. Those remaining in labouring roles can renew for a further five years by completing the Labourer card renewal declaration form, or by providing a letter from their employer — or main contractor, if self-employed — on company headed paper confirming they are working as a labourer.

How recently must the CITB test have been passed?

Within the last two years. CSCS requires applicants to have passed the appropriate level of the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test within that window, or hold an approved alternative, before applying for a card. A valid card does not keep the test result fresh for the next application.

How long does a CPCS or IPAF card last?

The CPCS Blue Competent Operator card has a five-year life and is renewable. The IPAF PAL card is valid for five years. The CPCS Red Trained Operator card is a shorter, time-limited card intended to be upgraded to Blue rather than renewed indefinitely — check the term printed on the card, as CPCS's published guidance on that page covers extensions of 12 months or 2 years rather than stating the initial term.

How often do I renew Gas Safe registration?

Annually. Gas Safe business registration runs for twelve months from the date you registered, so your renewal date is specific to your business rather than a common industry date. The ACS certificates of competence underneath it run on a five-year cycle and can be reassessed up to six months early without shortening the new five-year term.

Do I need to track cards separately from my accreditation?

Yes. Accreditation schemes renew annually on their own date and ask to see current cards at assessment, but no scheme tracks your people's card expiry for you — and cards belong to individuals, so they leave when the person does. Keeping both in one place is the only way the two ever agree.
