SafeContractor Checker: How to Verify a Contractor Really Holds It

If you are trying to check whether a contractor really holds SafeContractor, the honest answer is that you cannot do it from a public search — and the reason is more useful than the fact. SSIP is built so that the scheme name does not matter. Once you understand that, the checking problem gets simpler rather than harder.

Is there a public SafeContractor checker?

No. As checked on 19 September 2026, safecontractor.com publishes two entry points and both require an account:

• a Contractor Platform, where a member manages their own assessment
• a Client Platform, for hiring clients managing their supply chain

Neither is an open directory you can search without credentials, and no public "find a SafeContractor-approved contractor" tool is linked from the site.

That is not unusual and it is not evasive. It is the same position as CHAS: the scheme's contractor list is a commercial product sold to buyers, not a public register.

How do you check if a contractor is SafeContractor approved?

Three routes, in the order worth trying.

   Search the SSIP Portal. Free, public, no account needed to run a check. Search by organisation name at ssipportal.org.uk. A result confirms the company has been assessed and approved by an SSIP member scheme.

   Ask the contractor for the certificate. This is the only way to confirm SafeContractor specifically, and the only way to see the expiry date and the assessed work categories. Any accredited contractor can produce it in minutes; a reluctance to is itself informative.

   If you are a hiring client, use the Client Platform. If your organisation already buys SafeContractor's client service, the supply-chain view is the tool built for this. It is not available to a one-off checker.

A worked example

You are a main contractor about to appoint a roofing subcontractor who says they are "SafeContractor approved".

You search the SSIP Portal for their registered company name and get a match. That tells you they hold a current SSIP certificate from some member scheme — which, for the health-and-safety step of your own CDM duty, is the thing that actually matters. It does not tell you it was SafeContractor.

If your client's contract specifically names SafeContractor, the portal result is not enough and you need the certificate itself. If your contract says "SSIP" or "SSIP-approved", the portal result is the answer and the scheme name is a detail neither of you needs to care about.

Why won't the SSIP Portal tell me which scheme it was?

Because it is designed not to. The portal's stated purpose is to identify and verify that a company of a given name has been successfully assessed and approved by an SSIP member scheme — and it deliberately does not reveal which one, on the basis that all member schemes assess against the same SSIP Core Criteria and the results are treated as equivalent. That equivalence is the entire point of SSIP mutual recognition, and it cuts both ways. It is why a contractor with SMAS does not need to buy SafeContractor too. It is also why you cannot use a free tool to insist on one.

What does a SafeContractor certificate actually prove?

Less than most people assume, and that gap is where the real risk sits.

A current certificate says the company passed a health-and-safety assessment against the SSIP Core Criteria, within its assessed work categories, on the date it was issued. It is valid for 12 months.

It does not say:

• that the certificate is still in date today, unless you look at the date
• that the work you are about to hire them for falls inside their assessed categories
• anything about financial standing, quality, insurance levels beyond the minimum, or past performance
• that they hold Constructionline Gold or the Common Assessment Standard, which are what public-sector and framework buyers increasingly ask for

What if the contractor is not on the SSIP Portal?

Do not treat absence as proof of anything on its own. There are three ordinary explanations before you get to "they are not accredited":

• They were assessed in the last three days. Most member schemes upload within 24 hours, but it can take up to 72 hours for an entry to become visible.
• You searched a different name. Search the registered company name, not the trading name. "Smith Roofing" may be registered as "J Smith & Sons Limited".
• They hold something that is not SSIP at all. A trade body membership or a competent person scheme is not an SSIP certificate and will not appear.

If none of those explain it, the portal's own guidance is to contact the member scheme that carried out the assessment — which means asking the contractor which scheme that was.

How do I check my own SafeContractor listing is right?

If you are the contractor rather than the buyer, run the same search on your own registered name. It is the quickest way to see what a client sees.

If you are not there and it has been more than 72 hours since you were certified, contact SafeContractor directly — the portal cannot fix a missing entry, only the scheme that assessed you can.

And check the name. A portal entry under a slightly different legal name to the one on your tender is a mismatch a procurement team may not stop to resolve in your favour.

The part checking does not solve

Verifying someone else takes two minutes. Being the one who gets verified is the recurring job.

Your certificate expires 12 months from assessment. So does every insurance document and training record behind it, on its own separate date. A client who checks you in March and again in September is running two different checks, and the second one is the one that catches a lapsed employers' liability certificate you forgot renewed in July. That is the problem tracking renewal deadlines exists to solve, and it is why a lapse is usually a diary failure rather than a compliance one.
